English summary
The main focus of the dissertation ”Violence in intimate relations, men’s violence against women” is to research into the potential societal, structural and social as well as historical reasons for men in Greenland to commit violence against women in intimate relations.
The dissertation questions a common perception that men’s violence is solely related to alcohol problems. New dimensions are included in the understanding of violence: the circumstances of the life of the violent man and the offenders’ self-perception
The aim of the dissertation is thus to examine historical conditions, societal structures and social conditions, which may be risk factors for men's violence against women in intimate relations in Greenland, from a masculinity perspective. The current gender regime is, inter alia, a product of the colonial influence. Therefore, a look at history is necessary to understand the present.
In drum songs and narratives, the importance of providing for the family (being the bread winner) that gave a man his position in society is documented. It is a general characteristic that the central focus vas ‘providing’. In the drum songs from the pre-Christian hunter’s society and in the tales/narratives from the Christian colonial society a man’s honour depended on his abilities to provide. The role of the man as the ‘bread winner’ was decisive for his prestige, among other men and in the communities. The esteem of a man would be weakened if he lost the ability to provide for his family and if this ability was questioned.
Violence in intimate relations in today’s Greenland is analysed by applying police reports and judicial documents concerning all 21 men convicted for violence against women in intimate relationships in 2001 and qualitative interviews with 6 men convicted for violence against women in intimate relationships in 2017.
In today’s Greenland there have been marked changes ‘gender-based division of labour’ not least due to women’s increased participation in the labour market. Some men are due to unemployment, excluded from advantages as women’s labour market participation increases.
The changes in the occupational structure and an increasing number of women with both vocational and higher education imply a shift in employment from traditionally solely staffed or male-dominated occupations (e.g. hunting and fishing) towards not least the service sector. Thus, the proportion of jobs in public administration and services (e.g. in the health care, social institutions and education sector), which is increasingly employing women, has increased not least since the introduction of the Home Rule (1979). This relationship can be characterized as feminization of the labor market.
Concurrently with the societal changes, including changes in pattern of gender roles a marginalised masculinity might emerge.
There are a number of common features of the violent men, which means that almost everyone can be characterized as marginalized, with a loose connection to family, other social relationships and the labor market and with a limited educational background. At the same time, the violent men most often have a childhood and adolescence with neglect from parents, family and friends. Neglect to care and growing up in families with alcohol problems and violence characterize most of the violent men.
When focusing on the violence episode itself, my interpretation of the violent men's stories is that most of the men have experienced loss of control, and that a experiencing letdowns and jealousy as the basis for the violence, while almost everyone tells that they can't remember the episode because of drunkenness. Alcohol is an essential element in almost all episodes of violence.
In summary, and across the stories of the violent men, the assumption is that children who have been neglected by parents living with social disorders in their current life situation are more likely to be at risk of becoming abusers of alcohol and intoxicants as adults and to become violent - and often against people who are positioned in the same way. The risk seems to be greater when the child has been beaten by the parents and thus himself has been subjected to violence and thus can be said to have been socialized into violence.
