This research project investigates historical and contemporary practices concerning informal kinship care arrangements in Greenland and Denmark.
Historically, families and social networks have taken responsibility for children when parents were unable to provide care. In both countries there is a social service requirement that informal kinship care exceeding three months must be formally approved, but there is no knowledge of the actual extent. This study explores the extent and experiences of informal kinship care among adults previously in kinship care in Greenland and Denmark. Through comparative analysis we explore the underlying cultural and personal aspects of informal kinship care with the aim of providing new knowledge about this almost invisible aspect of social work with children.
