Invitation from Theological Society
The theological society at University of Greenland invites to a public lecture with Dr. Jan Borm, Professor of British Literature at the Institute of cultural and international studies at the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yveline.
The public lecture is titled: "The Moravian Archives in Herrnhut, Germany: some research perspectives in relation to Greenland’s ethnohistory and climate".
This talk will present research at the Moravian archives in Herrnhut, Germany, undertaken within the framework of the international and interdisciplinary project “Green Greenland” dedicated to the history of Greenland’s climate, funded by the French National Agency for Research (ANR).
Climate records about Greenland are still lacking information for various periods, in particular the early modern age.
The diaries and correspondence of the Moravian brethren in Greenland have proven to contain a wealth of information allowing to fill the gaps up to a varying degree in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The study of these sources which requires a lot of preparatory work on documents often difficult to decipher that need to be read also against the background of Moravian history, as Heinz Israel pointed out a ground breaking monograph from 1969.
“Green Greenland” has also allowed researchers to discover many fascinating details about life at the Moravian stations representing a significant contribution to Greenland’s ethno-history in the 18th and early 19th century.
